When to Cook an Old Hen – CHOW.com

www.chow.com Esperanza Pallana, who writes the urban farming blog Pluck and Feather, says that a chicken makes the transition to old hen after about three years. Old hens don’t make for good fryers, but they are perfect for stewing and soups.

You speak of conscience, a mostly religious concept, and then say “simple biology” – a nervous system is an adaptive characteristic of animals that enabled them to avoid dangerous stimuli, it’s only a series of electrical impulses, almost like a computer.

Once the chicken dies, these impulses are gone and the chicken doesn’t feel anything. It’s simple biology.

You’re also using the word “sadistic” incorrectly, but that’s another show.

I just explained you how your yest irony didn’t make sense. I’m talking about animals, not fungus or bacteria.
And about feeling pain, it’s not like a computer, it’s more like you feeling pain..
The conscious part I didn’t mean anything religious.. I just meant that they suffer and they know when something bad is happening. I have unfortunately to learn on animals, so I talk as my own experience.
And about “sadistic”, fine… english is not my first language… =)

The flavor might be lost in the cooking liquid, but if it’s something like soup that’s a good thing.

Thank you for pointing that out, people these days, with no connection to the place their food comes from have some very odd ideas about what a farm animal is and is not.

I don’t understand people, who say: “How can she kill an animal, to which she has an emotional bond?” Well, do you prefer, when some desensitized guys kill them in thousands at a slaughterhouse and don’t care, if the chickens suffer during that process?

Kudos to the woman in the video, who actually has the guts to kill the animals she eats…!

And if this spoils your appetite on your precious chicken mc nuggets, then you’re a hypocrite and should stop eating meat.

    My 2 cents..

I actually have a lot of respect for people like this woman, who are conscious about what they eat. I consider it a lot more cruel and desensitised, if people carelessly buy industrially produced meat, and don’t give a fuck about how the animals were treated before they came to the shopping mall as ready-to-eat food.

When my chicken stops producing eggs… then she can come inside and live among the humans. That’s her reward.
